What is eJournalism?

To many it is an unfamiliar word though it is not one to be feared!  EJournalism is the chance for teachers and students to work together to build journalism and technology skills. Comprised of a group of talented students from southern Saskatchewan with a desire to learn and handpicked by a stellar assembly of teachers, these students are experiencing the opportunity of a lifetime.

Technology is everywhere—in schools, at home, and at work—wherever one goes, technology looms. It doesn’t have to loom, though. The eJournalism team familiarizes themselves with various technological devices as well as perfecting their journalistic skills.

There are four main components to eJournalism. The video component works on video composition, angle shots and interviewing skills. The PhotoStory component allows students to experiment with photography, creating a visual story. Podcasting is a method that was new for most students. In this station, the team works solely with sound, interviewing people in and around the conference. The last component of eJournalism is the newsletter. In this more traditional method, students work on writing articles, summarizing sessions, and highlighting important events.

The members of the eJournalism team are grateful to both Microsoft and their teachers for supporting this opportunity.

eJ Comes to Banff
Prairie students climb mountains to reach their goals

Extraordinary. Amazing. Slippery. These are just a few of the words the eJournalism team came up with when describing their early impressions of Banff. For many, coming to Banff is old news, but for those who have never seen its beauty or its splendor, those many hours on the bus were well worth it.

The eJournalism team spent the majority of Sunday hiking through Banff’s natural wonders. They traversed the trails to visit the Hoodoos, strolled through the streets of Banff to Bow Falls, and traveled down to Johnson Canyon to take in the grandeur of the Upper and Lower falls.

The general impression gathered from the students is that they enjoyed their exploration through the wilderness. They were impressed with the prime hiking areas and saw some of the best scenery they’ve ever beheld. Even those who have traveled to Banff many a time found places they didn’t know existed.

Throughout these first few days, the eJournalism team was stimulated; all of their senses were exercised. The sight of a quaint town nestled in the mountains, the sound of rushing water, the cries of animals, the glorious scent of pine and mountain air, the feel of river rock on the dry creek bed, and the taste of Chef Rob Fuller’s exquisite cuisine enraptured, energized, and exhilarated the team.
