A. Understanding
Post-Secondary Lingo
1. Bachelor's
- also referred to as an Undergraduate or
Baccelaurate degree, usually 4 years of full-time classes
(120 credit hours)
2. Master's - referred to as a Graduate degree.
Length depends on full or part time attendance and the program,
but commonly 2 -3 more years with a Thesis and classes.
3. Doctorate - PH.D., also called a Post-graduate
degree. Again the length depends on the program.
*** All have
specific time limits within which they must be completed in order to
graduate.
University Faculty / University College
are overall groups of departments. The Faculty
of Arts & Sciences or the College of Arts & Sciences will be
made up of many departments such as Biology, Psychology or
English.
1.
Diploma's - are 2 year full time
programs that may or may not allow for individuals to practice
as licensed or registered professionals.
2. Certificate
- are programs that are one year or less in length and
sometimes are intended as pre-employment training, especially in
the trades.
3. Applied
Certificate - At SIAST, these are usually not comprehensive
enough to warrant certification or they are intended to be
additional training for those who already possess a certificate
- diploma - degree.
4. Private
Vocational College - are training institutes that do not
receive government or public funding. Some are recognized
colleges and receive accreditation in their fields, while others
may not. It is important to be aware of this.
B. Planning

essential things to do before leaving Canada to ensure a safe
trip. Consular Affairs (Department of Foreign Affairs &

C. Planning
to Attend Post-secondary in the United States
Remember that you
will need to write the ACT or SAT exam in order to attend
college/university in the U.S. Each college will specify if it
has a minimum score for admission and what that is. It is
recommended that you write the exam while in your Grade 11 year
if possible, however, you may still write it during your Grade
12 year also. You must pre-register for the test dates and there
are only a few each year. To find out when the test dates are,
the registration deadlines, the costs, the locations (i.e.
University of Regina, Athol Murray College of Notre Dame,
Brandon University, Assiniboine Comprehensive High School,
Yorkton Regional High School, Weyburn Comprehensive High
School), and to register for a date, see the websites:
www.actstudent.org or
www.collegeboard.com.
For the ACT, you
must order online a registration package for "Testing Outside
the U.S." and call the test location coordinator (listed on the
website) by the Friday two weeks before the test. You must pay
the fee with a U.S. dollars money order of $45 U.S. You also
need to take one piece of identification, preferably with a
picture. Also, take with you a calculator and pencils.
For the SAT, you
must register online (using a credit card) by the International
registration deadline for each test - please note it is a good
idea to register by the EARLY deadline or you may have to write
as a "standby" student (meaning you may not get to write the
test that day if it is full).
D. Obtaining
Official Transcripts from Saskatchewan Learning
1. You must fill
out a Request for High School Transcripts form. These are
available from your career counsellor, your school or online at:
http://www.education.gov.sk.ca/transcripts
. Requests can be made by fax or mail. Fax requests must include a VISA credit card number.
2. You must fill
in all the appropriate information, including your Saskatchewan
Student Id number (get from your career counsellor or it is on
the top of transcripts you would have received from Ministry of
Education in the past). Don't forget to sign and date it as well.
3. For
post-secondary admissions, most institutions require the
transcript to come directly to them from the Saskatchewan
Ministry. In order
to have your final official grades sent directly to the institution(s) you applied to, you must check off for them to be
sent "After second semester - July". If the program you have
applied to does not require a Grade 12, we may be able to
request for the transcripts to be sent immediately; however,
check with your Career Counsellor to see if this applies to
you.
4. Check off the
appropriate post-secondary institution(s). If it is not on the
list provided, check "Other", then list the appropriate
institution name and address on the back of the form. The cost
is $15 per institution that you request transcripts to be sent
to. Make cheque or money order payable to: Minister of
Finance, Government of Saskatchewan. For the $15, two copies
will be sent to the institution and one to the student. If
students want extra copies, they should indicate this on the
original request, for an additional $1.00 each; otherwise to
order three copies for yourself separately will be $15.
5. Mail or
fax it in to the Ministry of Saskatchewan. Address provided on
form.
